We Shall Never Forget…

On Friday, May 18, 2012, the 22nd Annual Wisconsin Law Enforcement Memorial Ceremony will be held at noon on the Capitol grounds in Madison. Two Wisconsin law enforcement officers will be added to the memorial during the ceremony. They are:

Officer Fredrick T. Samp from the Beloit Police Department was shot and killed on May 28, 1935, as he attempted to take two males into custody for armed attempted theft of a vehicle.

Officer Craig A. Birkholz from the Fond Du Lac Police Department was shot and killed on March 20, 2011, while responding for a call to assist officers, who were fired upon while they were conducting an investigation.

Speakers include Governor Scott Walker, Attorney General J.B. Van Hollen and former Fond Du Lac Police Chief Tony Barthuly.

Additionally, members of the Wisconsin State Patrol, Fond du Lac Police Department, Fond Du Lac County Sheriff’s Department, Manitowoc County Sheriff’s Department, Portage County Sheriff’s Department, Sheboygan County Sheriff’s Department and Fitchburg Police Department Honor Guards will post guards at the memorial site starting at sunrise. Similar to the military guards at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier at Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington, Virginia, two memorial guard members will continually encircle the memorial site from about 5 a.m. until the memorial ceremony at noon.

Since 1844 more than 250 law enforcement officers have been killed in the line of duty in Wisconsin.
