Updated Press Release on Fallen Officer Michael J. Michalski

Released to Media on Thursday, July 26, 2018 at 1:59 p.m.

On Wednesday, July 25, 2018, at approximately 5:00 P.M., officers assigned to the Special Investigations Division responded to the 2400 block of North 28th Street to search for a suspect who was wanted for a violation of parole, possession of a controlled substance – heroin and harassment intimidation domestic violence related.
Members of the unit observed the suspect run into a home in the area. Officers entered the residence to search for the suspect at which time the suspect fired multiple rounds at police, striking Officer Michalski. Officers returned fire and ultimately took the suspect into custody. The suspect was not struck by gunfire and no other citizen or officer was injured.
Officer Michalski was transported to Froedtert Hospital with serious injuries. Officer Michalski subsequently died as a result of his injuries despite the lifesaving efforts of the Milwaukee Fire Department and the medical team at Froedtert.
Officer Michalski was 52 years old and he leaves behind a wife and 3 sons. At this time we ask that you respect thefamily’s privacy.

The suspect was identified as Jonathan C. Copeland Jr. Copeland is a convicted felon and has an extensive juvenile and adult criminal history.

Officer Michalski’s Work History

He was appointed as a Seasonal Police Telecommunicator on June 1, 1998.

He was then appointed as a Regular Police Telecommunicator on September 20, 1998.

He resigned on September 19, 2000, and was hired by the Milwaukee County Sheriff’s Office as a deputy on January 7, 2000 – and resigned on February 16, 2001.

On February 19, 2001, Officer Michalski was hired as a police officer.
