A Milwaukee Police officer is safe tonight after encountering a suspect armed with a long gun in a home on Milwaukee’s North Side.
An outside agency has been contacted to lead the investigation, however preliminary information from the scene indicates that shortly after 1 p.m. on Saturday, February 21, Milwaukee Police officers were dispatched to assist Milwaukee Fire Department personnel in the 3300 block of North 10th Street. Milwaukee Fire Department personnel had been sent to an address to provide medical attention to a patient. When they arrived, they determined that there was an ongoing violent encounter occurring at the address and summoned Milwaukee Police. Shortly after MFD requested MPD assistance, a witness inside the home called 911 to report the violent encounter and ask for police services. When Milwaukee police officers arrived, they identified several witnesses in the home and ensured their safety. While searching the home for the suspect, an officer encountered an adult male who pointed a long gun at the officer. The officer fired, striking the suspect. The suspect is undergoing treatment at an area hospital. No officers or witnesses were injured. A weapon has been recovered at the scene.
The officer involved is a 50 year old male with 21 years of service as a Milwaukee Police Officer. As is protocol, he has been placed on administrative duty pending the outcome of the investigation. The suspect is an 18-year-old male from Milwaukee with a criminal record.
Milwaukee Police have contained the scene and identified witnesses. Pursuant an agreed-upon practice between the Milwaukee Police Department and the Wisconsin Department of Justice, the Department of Justice’s Division of Criminal Investigation has been contacted and will lead the investigation. UPDATE (2/24/15 at 3:20 p.m.): The 18-year-old suspect shot after pointing a gun at a Milwaukee Police officer on February 21 continues to receive treatment at a local hospital. The domestic violence case against the suspect will be reviewed by the Milwaukee County District Attorney’s Office in the coming weeks. The Wisconsin Department of Justice, Division of Criminal Investigation continues to investigate the shooting and has provided the Milwaukee Police Department with a photograph of the gun the suspect pointed at the officer (photo is below). The gun is described as an “Airsoft” style gun resembling an assault rifle. As is protocol, the officer involved remains on administrative duty pending the outcome of the investigation.
