A suspect was shot by a Milwaukee police officer after the suspect disarmed and attacked the officer with his baton. The struggle started after the uniformed officer was called to Red Arrow Park, in the 900 block of N. Water Street, at about 3:30 pm on April 30, 2014 for a trouble with a subject complaint. The suspect became combative as the officer investigated. The officer defended himself with his baton, however the suspect gained control of the baton and began to strike the officer in the head. The officer, under attack, fired his handgun at the suspect, striking him. Responding officers attempted life-saving measures, however the suspect died at the scene. The suspect has not yet been identified.
The officer was conveyed to Froedtert Hospital where he was treated for his injuries and released. He is 38-years-old with 13 years of service. He is assigned to District 1.
The Wisconsin Department of Justice’s Division of Criminal Investigation along with the Milwaukee Police Department and the Milwaukee County District Attorney’s Office are investigating this incident. As is standard operating procedure, the officer involved in the incident has been placed on administrative duty pending the results of the investigation.
