Milwaukee Police are investigating a homicide of a three-month-old male infant that took place around 8:45 p.m. on July 30 in the 9200 block of N. 75th Street. The male suspect, who is the father of the infant, became involved in a dispute with the mother of the infant. The father took the infant from the house and walked into a nearby pond of water until he was submerged up to his chest.
A civilian witness observed this act taking place and without hesitation followed the suspect into the water to prevent harm to the infant. Responding officers also proceeded into the water, without hesitation, in an attempt to rescue the infant and apprehend the suspect. When officers reached the suspect, he was not in possession of the infant. The suspect was taken into custody while still in the pond; meanwhile, additional officers searched the pond for the infant. The unconscious infant was located within minutes and officers rushed to shore to immediately began resuscitation efforts. The Milwaukee Fire Department arrived on the scene and began Advanced Life Support efforts. Unfortunately the infant was unable to be revived and died at the scene.
While apprehending the suspect and searching for the infant, several officers fell unintentionally ingested the untreated pond water. They were taken to a local hospital as a precaution, they are expected to make a full recovery. The case will be presented to the Milwaukee County District Attorney’s Office in the coming days for charges.
