An armed robbery suspect is arrested by Milwaukee Police after running from a fatal traffic crash at N. 53rd and W. Center Streets on Milwaukee’s West Side.
Preliminary information indicates the incident began at about 11:30 a.m, on April 28 when Milwaukee Police were called to the report of an armed robbery at the US Bank at 5220 W. North Avenue. A 25-year-old Milwaukee man reported to a teller that he was being robbed by an armed suspect in the parking lot. The suspect fled from the robbery in a 1998 Chevy Malibu northbound on N. 53rd Street to W. Center Street where he crashed into a westbound 1997 Mercury Cougar. The suspect, who dropped a loaded semiautomatic handgun as he ran from the car, failed his attempt to get into the car of a passerby. The suspect, since identified as a 22-year-old Milwaukee man, then ran into a nearby apartment building where he was arrested by responding officers.
The Mercury Cougar was driven by a 54-year-old Milwaukee man who died at the scene as a result of injuries sustained in the crash.
The Milwaukee Police officer who responded to the bank followed the flight path of the fleeing car in an attempt to catch up to the suspect when he came upon the crash shortly after it happened. His northbound squad was struck by a 2004 Hyundai Santa Fe that was eastbound on Center Street. The officer was conveyed to a local hospital for treatment of non-life threatening injures, as was the 35-year-old woman driving the Santa Fe.
The investigation is ongoing and more information will be released when it becomes available.
