Off-duty Detective Catches Burglars in the Act

An off-duty Milwaukee Police Detective was returning to his home near S. 44th & Manitoba about 5:50 p.m. on Monday, November 12, 2012 and found his side door open at his residence.

He immediately called police to get squads responding. He took a position of cover nearby and stayed on the phone with dispatch.  A suspect peeked out the front door and immediately retreated. A second suspect came out of the side door and peeked out from the screen door with a handgun in his hand.  The Detective observed the suspect start bringing the gun up to point at him so the Detective discharged his personal firearm. No one was struck. 

 The suspect ran westbound through the back yard and the Detective maintained his position until uniform squads arrived. One suspect was located hiding in the basement and was taken into custody; another was arrested a short time later. One of the suspects remain at large.

The Detective is a 44-year-old male and has 16 years of service with the Milwaukee Police Department. He is assigned to the Criminal Investigation Bureau. The Milwaukee Police Department is investigating the incident. The Detective remains on full duty.
