UPDATE: Woman Strangled by Suspect Prior to August 6 Fatal Crash

Milwaukee Police are investigating a fatal crash that happened around 1:25 a.m. on August 6 in the 4700 block of W. Hoyt Place. A 33-year-old man was driving westbound in a 2011 Nissan Sentra when he drove off the roadway and struck a light pole. The passenger in the car, 40-year-old Maria E. Mexicano, was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver was not injured and was arrested for Operating While Intoxicated. The Milwaukee County Medical Examiner’s Office is scheduled to perform an autopsy today to determine a cause of death. Our investigation is ongoing.

UPDATE (8/7/17 at 2:55 p.m.):  The August 6 fatal crash in the 4700 block of W. Hoyt Place has now been determined a homicide.  The investigation has revealed the 40-year-old female victim was strangled before the crash occurred and died as a result of those injuries.  The driver, a 33-year-old man, is the suspect in this case and he remains in custody.  MPD will present this case to the Milwaukee County District Attorney’s Office in the coming days.
