Listen in as MPD Telecommunicator Saves The Day – And A Life
August 1st, 2012 by milwaukeepolice
A Milwaukee Police Telecommunicator this weekend showed the kind of professionalism and compassion that truly demonstrate what it means to be a first responder.
On Sunday, June 24, 2012, at 10:36 a.m., District 7 squads were dispatched to a subject with a gun complaint at a home on the city’s north side. The caller stated her boyfriend was in the backyard of the address with a gun to his chest threatening to kill himself.
As officers approached the address, they were notified the suicidal subject had placed the gun down and his girlfriend had recovered it. Officers approached the man, and he was taken into custody and conveyed to the Milwaukee County Mental Health Complex without incident.
During the subsequent investigation, both the suicidal subject and his girlfriend related to police that the person they were talking to on 911 helped calm the man, convincing him to put the gun down. The man’s girlfriend told investigators that the 911 operator was calm, gave her instructions and calmed her down, and was a key reason why the suicidal subject put the gun down.
A check of the call record revealed that Police Telecommunicator Keena Woods-Smith was the TC speaking to both subjects. Her professionalism had a calming effect on both subjects involved in this incident, and her actions directly correlated to a successful resolution to this incident. Her supervisors have recommended her for an official commendation from the department.
