Felon with Gun, Another Suspect, Arrested After Disorder in Parking Garage

Two Milwaukee men, including a convicted felon, are arrested and charged following an incident in a parking garage. Milwaukee Police officers were in the 600 block of N. Water Street at approximately 1:50 am on May 31 monitoring the closing of a tavern. The officers responded to reports of people fighting in a parking garage in the 500 block of N. Water Street. Officers saw two subjects in a parked car and numerous unspent cartridges lying next to the driver’s door. The man in the driver’s seat reached toward his waistband and officers suspected he was reaching for a firearm.

The two men were ordered out of the vehicle but both the driver and passenger fled. The driver, 22-year-old Joseph D. Gill of Milwaukee, tried to throw his gun through an opening in the parking garage and into the Milwaukee River but the gun struck the ceiling instead and landed on the floor. Officers immediately took him into custody. The passenger in the car, 24-year-old Deonta L. Ames of Milwaukee, was stopped by security guards from a local tavern. As an officer began to question him, Ames began to fight with him and after a brief struggle was taken into custody.

Gill is a convicted felon stemming from a 2010 case. He is charged with Possession of a Firearm by a Felon and Obstructing/Resisting an Officer. If convicted, he faces more than ten years in prison. Ames currently has an open court case for Disorderly Conduct from April 2014. In this latest incident, he is charged with Obstructing/Resisting an Officer and Bail Jumping. He could serve up to 18 months in prison if convicted.
