Milwaukee Police are investigating a single-vehicle fatal traffic crash that happened shortly after 1:30 a.m. on March 18 in the 6300 block of W. Appleton Avenue.
Witnesses tell police that a 1998 Mercedes-Benz C230 4-door sedan was traveling eastbound on W. Appleton Avenue at a high rate of speed when the driver lost control of the car at W. Burleigh Street, causing the vehicle to strike a fence, a pole, and a building, eventually turning onto its side. The car was occupied by a 22-year-old Milwaukee woman and her 7-month-old son, who sustained serious injuries in the crash and died while en route to the hospital. Investigators determined that the child was positioned in an infant carrier not secured to the vehicle at the time of the crash.
The driver is receiving treatment at a local hospital for serious injuries that are not believed to be life threatening. She is in police custody for Homicide by Intoxicated Use of a Motor Vehicle and Operating After Suspension, Causing Death. The case will be presented to the Milwaukee County District Attorney’s Office in the coming days.
